ESSAY written by Joseph McElroy published in The Electronic Book Review on 10/1/23
What happens in the space between the human and the place? Do we truly behold an environment, a landscape? What are we capable of experiencing through someone else’s eyes?
Whispered Conversations is a call and response between artists and travelers, Kate Collyer, Lorrie Fredette and Megan Propeglia. As a collective, they agreed to a shared approach to walking and cultivating a steady slowness with new eyes. Through observation, collection, and reflection they explored new environments during individual journeys in 2021. After returning, each artist responded to the micro terrain by gathering objects that helped make sense of how the land was perceived and questioned their relationship to place.
They allowed the places we “think we know” to wear them and now offer these reliquaries as a journaled response. These were recorded in sculptural “bundles”. They mailed the bundles to each other and extended the same powers of observation that they had exercised during their journeys. The result with new work created in response that is the basis for Whispered Conversations.
The artists of Whispered Conversations set out to question their relationship to their “homes,” to honor the places that continue to hold them, and to remember the landscapes that showed them our human scale.
